MUSCAT – The tragic incident unfolded at the SVNIT, after Advait Nair, a 20-year-old third-year Computer Science Engineering student and son of Omani residents, died following an alleged fall from his hostel building.
The incident has sparked protests on the college campus, with students demanding accountability from the institute.
According to reports, Advait, who had been admitted on an NRI seat in 2023, called his parents in Muscat on Sunday night and told them he had “boarded a flight to Muscat” before jumping from the second floor of Bhabha Bhavan Boys’ Hostel. He was found critically injured and rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Students have staged protests accusing the institute of negligence and fostering a ‘torture culture’. Many pointed to the fact that Advait had reportedly stopped attending classes for several months and had become increasingly isolated, raising questions about why the administration did not intervene.
In response to the incident, the college authorities have suspended the hostel warden and set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Advait’s death. Umra police have registered the case as an accidental death and launched an inquiry.
Advait’s father, who is reportedly a metallising engineer in Oman, and his wife immediately travelled from Muscat to Surat to receive their son’s body, which was later transported to Kerala for final rites.
