SUR — The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Sur held a student-organised symposium on Tuesday examining the links between insects, ecosystems and environmental sustainability, as Oman faces growing biodiversity and climate pressures.

The event, titled “Buzz and Balance: Exploring Nature Through Ecology and Entomology,” featured 50 poster presentations, hands-on experiments and laboratory demonstrations by students from the Department of Applied Biotechnology. The programme was supported by Rainbow Chemicals.

The symposium was inaugurated by Dr. Raya Al Hajri, Deputy AVC for Electronic Systems and Student Services, who also unveiled the event souvenir. Al Hajri said the initiative reflected the university’s drive to strengthen research-oriented learning and student participation in environmental studies.

Dr. Sara Al Araimi, Head of the ABT Department, and Dr. Salma Al Masharafi, former Dean of UTAS Sur, attended as chief guests. Both said student work in ecology and entomology was increasingly relevant as Oman looks to protect ecosystems ranging from coastal plains to mountain habitats.

Research topics presented at the symposium included forensic entomology, pollinator behaviour, natural pest-control strategies, vector-borne diseases, and industrial applications of insects such as silk and cochineal dye production. Students also examined micro-ecosystems in Oman, biodiversity indices, mangrove environments and the impact of climate change on species decline. Field investigations at the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve and laboratory studies on dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll were among the practical components showcased.

The symposium was convened by Dr. PV, course instructor for Ecology and Entomology, and coordinated by Ms. Gaithaa Al Wardi with support from Dr. Shamshad Khan and Dr. Hamid Iqbal. Students Ismail, Deema, Algazi and Saleh said the event provided valuable exposure to scientific presentation and research practices.

UTAS-Sur said the initiative aligns with its efforts to promote environmental awareness and increase student engagement in applied scientific research across the Sultanate.
