MUSCAT – According to the Ministry, Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. The infection often begins with flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue, followed by a distinct rash that may appear on the face, genitals, or other parts of the body. The rash progresses through several stages – macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, and scabs – before healing.

The disease spreads mainly through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, particularly when the rash is present. It can also spread through touching contaminated materials, such as bedding, towels, or clothing, and through prolonged face-to-face contact via respiratory droplets.

To protect yourself, the Ministry advises the public to:
• Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
• Avoid close physical contact with individuals showing symptoms of Mpox.
• Avoid touching items or surfaces that may be contaminated.
Anyone who develops symptoms consistent with Mpox is urged to seek medical advice immediately, isolate themselves, and cover any lesions to prevent transmission to others.
