MUSCAT : Organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in cooperation with the Sinaw Cultural Center, the two-day event coincided with Omani Agriculture Day and brought together researchers, experts, and stakeholders to discuss the future of agriculture in the Sultanate.

Among the key recommendations was the documentation and integration of traditional agricultural knowledge into academic and research programs to ensure the continuity of Oman’s farming heritage. The symposium urged the adoption of smart technologies to boost efficiency in agricultural production and manage non-renewable resources more sustainably.

Participants also emphasized the need to launch national programs that enhance water and energy use in farming through sustainable and energy-saving technologies, while encouraging applied research and innovation to strengthen food security and self-sufficiency.

The event further recommended establishing a national database to document local crop varieties, aflaj irrigation systems, and traditional know-how, serving as a reference for future studies. Collaboration between government entities, universities, and the private sector was also highlighted as vital to accelerating the adoption of sustainable agricultural solutions.

Another major focus was on embedding sustainability principles into educational curricula and expanding exhibitions that showcase agricultural innovations, thereby inspiring youth and entrepreneurs to embrace modern technologies.

Over the course of the symposium, attendees, including His Excellency Dr. Ahmed bin Nasser Al-Bakri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries and Water Resources for Agriculture, explored three main themes: agricultural heritage and traditional practices, the role of technology in improving production, and advancements in research and innovation.

A total of 24 research papers were presented by experts in agriculture, livestock, and water resources, all contributing toward a unified vision.
