MUSCAT : This year’s theme, ‘Eliminating Plastic Pollution’, highlights the urgent need to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the Arab world today.
As part of the celebration, the Environment Authority is showcasing its ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste and raise public awareness on environmental preservation. These initiatives align with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritises sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

Among the key measures taken is the implementation of a gradual ban on plastic shopping bags, which began in July 2024 and will continue in phases until July 2027. The Authority is also advancing strict environmental policies, enhancing waste management systems, and promoting a shift towards clean and renewable energy sources.
In tackling plastic pollution specifically, the Authority is combining legislative action, scientific research, and community engagement. Research initiatives include studies on microplastic contamination in marine environments, while outreach efforts feature school awareness programmes, local community campaigns, and annual beach clean-ups.
Additionally, the Authority is conducting seminars on plastic waste recycling, and workshops on the health and environmental risks of plastic water bottles, promoting eco-friendly alternatives such as glass or cardboard packaging.
