CAIRO — World leaders gathered in Egypt on Monday for a high-level summit aimed at consolidating the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, following weeks of intensive diplomacy to end two years of conflict in Gaza.
The summit, hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Sharm el-Sheikh, brought together U.S. President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and several Arab and European leaders. The talks seek to reinforce the truce brokered last week and pave the way for renewed peace negotiations.
According to Egyptian officials, discussions will focus on ensuring humanitarian access to Gaza, reconstruction efforts, and mechanisms to prevent future escalations. The United Nations and the Arab League are also participating as observers.

“The ceasefire must hold — and it must lead to a political horizon,” President el-Sisi said in his opening remarks. “This is a moment for courage, for compromise, and for commitment to peace.”
President Trump, who arrived in Israel earlier in the day before flying to Egypt, called the ceasefire “a step toward lasting peace,” urging all sides to seize the opportunity to “end the cycle of destruction.”
The summit follows the release of 20 Israeli hostages by Hamas under the terms of the truce, with mediators from Qatar and Egypt playing a crucial role. While the ceasefire has brought a temporary calm to Gaza, international observers warn that the situation remains fragile.
Diplomatic sources said follow-up meetings will be held in the coming days to outline a roadmap for reconstruction and broader reconciliation talks.
