AHMEDABAD : Shubman Gill is set to be named India’s new ODI captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma, and will lead the team in the upcoming three-match series against Australia beginning October 19, ESPNcricinfo has reported.

Rohit has been included in the squad purely as a batter and, along with Virat Kohli, will return to the national side for the first time since the Champions Trophy in March. The selection meeting, chaired by former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar, took place on Saturday in Ahmedabad, where India are currently playing a Test series against West Indies.

At 26, Gill now holds official leadership roles across formats — captain in Tests and ODIs, and vice-captain in T20Is. His rise marks a generational shift in Indian cricket’s leadership core.

Rohit, 38, captained India in ODIs since December 2021, guiding the team in 56 matches, with 42 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result. He secured two Asia Cup titles (2018 as stand-in, 2023 as full-time skipper), led India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and capped his tenure by lifting the 2025 Champions Trophy.

With both Rohit and Kohli retired from Tests and T20Is, the Australian tour will be their first international assignment in over seven months. Afterward, India are scheduled to host South Africa for three ODIs in November-December, followed by a home ODI series against New Zealand in January.
