Ahmedabad: Opting to bat first on a greenish pitch, the West Indies collapsed inside two sessions, lasting just 44.1 overs. Siraj (4/40) and Bumrah (3/42) were the chief destroyers, sharing seven wickets between them, while Kuldeep Yadav (2/25) and Washington Sundar (1/28) chipped in to complete the demolition.
The damage began early as Siraj struck thrice in his opening burst, reducing the Windies to 42/4. Tagenarine Chanderpaul departed for a duck, John Campbell fell cheaply for 8, and Brandon King misjudged a delivery that rattled his stumps. A brief 48-run stand between skipper Roston Chase (24) and Shai Hope (26) offered some resistance, but Kuldeep’s sharp turner breached Hope’s defence to end the fightback. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32, only to fall victim to Bumrah’s trademark yorker, while the tail folded meekly.
In reply, India began steadily through Yashasvi Jaiswal (36) and KL Rahul, who added 68 for the opening stand. Jaiswal’s aggressive stroke play ended after rain when he nicked Jayden Seales behind. Despite a minor wobble with Sai Sudharsan falling for 7, Rahul stood tall, compiling a gritty 53 not out from 114 balls with six boundaries to notch up his 20th Test fifty.
