MUSCAT – This year’s theme, ‘From Science to Global Action’, highlights the critical role of science in driving effective measures to protect the ozone layer.

The celebration underscores the importance of the Montreal Protocol in safeguarding the ozone layer, which shields the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation, while also supporting broader climate action initiatives worldwide.

Oman became a party to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer by Royal Decree No. 73/1998. Since then, Oman has adhered to all subsequent amendments, including the London, Copenhagen, Montreal, Beijing, and Kigali amendments.

Since 2001, Oman has implemented various policies, programmes, and regulations to comply with these international commitments, successfully reducing and phasing out key ozone-depleting substances. By 2010, consumption of halons and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) reached zero, and the use of methyl bromide was discontinued by 2015.

Regarding hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), the Montreal Protocol mandates a gradual phase-out by 2030. Oman has achieved significant reductions: 10% by 2015, 35% by 2020, and is on track to meet a 67.5% reduction by 2025.

In support of ongoing efforts, the Environment Authority and the Oman Energy Association (OPAL) recently signed a strategic cooperation program to develop and implement professional competency standards in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector, promoting environmentally friendly practices.
Oman’s commitment aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes environmental and climate sustainability, and reflects the country’s dedication to international environmental agreements. Notably, the Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol became the first UN treaties ratified by all member states in 2009.

Currently, Oman is implementing the third phase of the HCFC Phase-Out Strategy Project in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). This project focuses on training, awareness-raising, and updating national regulations to meet Protocol requirements.

Oman’s participation in the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer highlights its active role in global environmental protection and sustainable resource management. Through legislation, capacity building, and international cooperation, Oman continues to contribute meaningfully to protecting the ozone layer, benefiting human health and ecosystems worldwide.
