MUSCAT : According to the 2025 Statistical Yearbook released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), run-over accidents were the second most common type of road incident in the Sultanate last year, accounting for 389 cases, with Muscat alone recording 96 — the highest among all governorates.
In total, 586 people lost their lives and 1,936 were injured in 1,854 road accidents across Oman in 2024. Although the number of accidents dropped by over 9 percent compared to 2023, the number of deaths saw just a slight decrease from the 595 fatalities recorded the previous year.
The primary reasons for road accidents in Oman remain speeding; reckless behaviour and negligence; fatigue; overtaking and tailgating; driving under the influence; mechanical failures and poor road conditions; and adverse weather.
The three most frequent types of road incidents in 2024 were vehicle collisions (806 cases), run-over accidents (389 cases) and crashes into fixed objects (338 cases).
Among those who died in traffic accidents last year were 293 expatriates and 293 Omanis, including 17 women and 276 men. Pedestrian fatalities included 28 women, highlighting the vulnerability of those on foot.
To help prevent these incidents, authorities and road safety advocates call on pedestrians to always use designated pedestrian crossings and be ever alert.
Authorities continue to urge motorists to respect traffic laws and adopt safer driving practices to protect themselves and others on the road.
