MUSCAT – The initiative is part of the broader national vision to strengthen Oman’s digital payment infrastructure and promote financial self-reliance. Local banks are already working in coordination with the CBO to implement the system, with the card expected to launch in the coming months.

The Maal card is being developed as an extension of the existing national payment framework, OmanNet, and will offer residents a secure, seamless, and locally managed payment solution. Officials say the project is a significant move towards reducing dependency on foreign payment networks and enhancing the overall efficiency of domestic financial transactions.

The national card is expected to streamline transaction costs, enable faster fund movement, support financial inclusion, and further boost the Sultanate’s digital economy.

With the introduction of Maal, Oman joins a growing list of GCC countries that have launched their own national payment systems to complement global card networks.
