MUSCAT – In a notice issued, the Authority stressed that the effectiveness of emergency exits relies heavily on strict adherence to safety standards and keeping exit routes completely free of obstacles. These exits serve as essential lifelines, enabling workers and visitors to evacuate safely and quickly during emergencies.
“Emergency exits are the lifeline of safety in facilities and buildings, and their effectiveness is only achieved by adhering to safety requirements and keeping them free of obstacles,” stated the Authority’s message.
It pointed out that emergency exit doors must meet specific safety requirements, including being easy to open and aligned with the direction of the escape route. The number and capacity of emergency exits must also be proportionate to the building’s occupancy, ensuring a smooth evacuation process.

Besides, the materials used in constructing emergency exit doors must comply with national safety standards, making them resistant to fire and smoke. The Authority recommends that emergency exits be connected to fire alarm systems, allowing them to open automatically in the event of a fire, thereby facilitating rapid evacuation.
To ensure adequate preparedness, buildings must have at least two well-separated emergency exits on each floor, along with clearly visible signage indicating the direction of the nearest exits.
The CDAA calls on all property owners, facility managers, and safety officers to regularly inspect emergency exits and maintain full compliance with safety regulations. Such vigilance, the Authority notes, is vital to protecting lives and enhancing the overall safety culture in the Sultanate.
