MUSCAT – With the area currently outside the Khareef season, temperatures are significantly high, posing serious risks to hikers.
“This poses a risk to lives as the trail signs are under construction, making the multi-directional roads rough and blocked. Therefore, it is essential to have an experienced guide and to be fully prepared. The Environment Authority calls on all hiking teams to adhere to the necessary guidelines, regulations, and laws,” the alert stressed.
The Authority noted that trail signs are still under construction, making some routes difficult to follow or completely obstructed. As a result, visitors are strongly advised to only embark on the hike with a qualified and experienced guide.

Hiking teams and individual adventurers must be fully prepared and should not underestimate the challenges of the trail, it warned.
Following are the key guidelines from EA for a safe hike to Jabal Samhan Summit:
• Entry Permit: A reserve entry permit must be obtained from the Directorate General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate.
• Preparation: Proper preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable trip to the summit of Jabal Samhan.
• Navigation Tools: As the trail lacks clear markings, visitors should bring reliable navigation tools such as a compass, GPS device, or detailed maps—and know how to use them effectively.
• Inform Others: Leave information about the hiking route and expected return time with a trusted person.
• Knowledge is the Best Compass: Consult experienced hikers or local guides before starting the trail.
• Physical Fitness: visitors are required to ensure their fitness levels allow them to endure the climb to the summit.
• Water Supplies: Water sources along the trail are scarce, so carry sufficient water and manage it wisely throughout the trek.
In a related development, a joint team from the Environment Authority and the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar recently conducted a field visit to the Jabal Samhan Peak Compass site. The visit aimed to evaluate and begin installing directional signs and guideposts along two key routes leading to the summit, improving navigation and safety for future visitors.
