MUSCAT – “There has been a noticeable rise in traffic incidents involving some new drivers, due to limited experience,” the ROP stated.
To address the issue, the ROP pointed to key legislative changes made in 2018, when Oman amended its Traffic Law and Executive Regulations. These updates introduced a range of stricter controls during the probation period for new drivers, including enhanced monitoring, clear behavioural restrictions, and mandatory educational follow-ups in the event of traffic violations.
The following is the response from the ROP to the question pertaining to accidents involving new drivers, and the steps taken to address the same: “It is worth noting that the amendment of the Traffic Law and its Executive Regulations in 2018 specifically addressed issues related to new drivers, introducing stricter monitoring during the probation period, clearer restrictions, and structured educational follow-ups for violations. These legal updates support efforts to improve compliance, reduce accident rates, and ensure that all drivers, including new license holders, adhere to safe driving practices in Oman.”
The measures align with the ROP’s broader strategy to reduce accident rates and improve road safety outcomes across the country. Officials emphasised that these rules not only serve as a deterrent to risky behaviour but also provide guidance and corrective support for those still learning the responsibilities of driving.
