MUSCAT – “The AI-enabled cameras will cover all currently uncovered intersections across Oman, ensuring comprehensive monitoring in urban centres and governorates. Additionally, selected highways in different provinces will be equipped with these systems, focusing on areas with higher traffic volumes and safety priorities,” stated the ROP’s traffic department, in response to a question on the areas covered by AI-enabled traffic surveillance system.
Explaining further about the methodology employed to ensure efficiency, the ROP added: “The system uses advanced AI algorithms to detect multiple violations simultaneously (such as speeding, signal violations, distracted driving, and not wearing seat-belt) and automatically sends data to the control centres, enabling faster enforcement and data-driven decision-making to enhance road safety.”
When asked about the specific penalties for drivers caught using mobile phones or failing to wear seatbelts, the ROP reaffirmed that fines and traffic points will be imposed as clearly outlined in the Omani Traffic Law. These measures, the department pointed out, are part of the ROP’s continued efforts to reduce distracted driving and improve compliance with seatbelt use, both of which are leading contributors to road injuries and fatalities in the Sultanate.

“The AI cameras ensure consistent detection and enforcement of these violations, reinforcing the culture of road safety across the Sultanate of Oman,” the ROP stressed.
The AI-powered system, launched earlier this month, is part of the ROP’s wider digital transformation strategy aimed at reducing traffic violations and enhancing driver accountability. The initiative integrates advanced artificial intelligence algorithms with existing smart traffic infrastructure, creating a seamless network capable of detecting multiple infractions simultaneously, including mobile phone use while driving, not wearing seatbelts, speeding, and signal violations.
