MUSCAT : The ministry urges citizens and residents to take preventive measures to protect their skin and overall health during the summer months.
The advisory highlights several common heat-related skin conditions, their symptoms, and practical tips for prevention. These include:
- Sunburn
• Symptoms: Redness, painful or itchy bumps, peeling skin — especially in areas where sweat accumulates.
• Prevention: Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, wear protective clothing and hats, and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours. - Heat Rash
• Symptoms: Red, itchy blisters that often appear in areas with trapped sweat, such as the neck, chest, or underarms.
• Prevention: Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and shower regularly to reduce sweating and skin irritation. - Tinea Versicolor (Fungal Infection)
• Symptoms: Scaly, itchy skin spots caused by fungal overgrowth, often triggered by heat and sweat.
• Prevention: Avoid excessive sweating, wear breathable cotton clothing, steer clear of skin oils, and wash affected areas with antifungal shampoos. - Sun-Induced Rash or Itching
• Symptoms: Skin irritation and rashes that develop after sun exposure, especially in individuals with sensitive skin.
• Prevention: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, limit direct sun exposure, and consult a dermatologist if you have a history of skin allergies. - Ulcers and Eczema
• Symptoms: Dryness, cracking, itching, and inflamed skin patches.
• Prevention: Moisturise regularly with rich creams, bathe with lukewarm water, avoid harsh soaps, and wear cotton clothing to reduce irritation.
General Tips:
• Moisturise frequently to keep skin hydrated and resilient.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
• Consult a dermatologist promptly if unusual skin symptoms or persistent irritation occur.
“Being aware of common summer skin conditions and ways to prevent them can help keep your skin healthy this season. Follow these tips for a safe and enjoyable summer,” the advisory stated.
