MUSCAT – The complex procedure was led by Dr. Ghusn Al-Sudairi, head of the neurosurgery team, and carried out entirely by Omani medical professionals, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s surgical capabilities.

Awake craniotomy is regarded as one of the most delicate and advanced neurosurgical procedures globally. It is typically used for tumours located near critical areas of the brain that control speech and motor functions. During the operation, the patient remains awake and responsive, allowing surgeons to monitor and preserve vital neurological functions while removing the tumour.

The successful execution of this highly specialised procedure underscores the readiness and maturity of Oman’s national healthcare system, and the exceptional skills of Omani medical professionals. It also reinforces the strategic vision of University Medical City to position itself as a regional and global leader in advanced medicine.

This medical milestone aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which prioritises the development of a world-class, patient-centred healthcare system built on innovation, expertise, and national capacity-building.

Officials from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital hailed the surgery as a pioneering moment for Omani medicine, demonstrating not only surgical excellence but also the growing ability of the Sultanate to carry out complex medical procedures independently and to global standards.
