Muscat: Oman’s dramatic mountains, diverse terrain, and rich heritage are fueling a boom in adventure tourism, according to the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. From hiking and zip-lining to caving and canyoning, the country’s unique geography—particularly in regions like the Eastern and Western Al Hajar Mountains, Dhofar, and Musandam—offers a playground for thrill-seekers.

Yousef bin Rashid Al Harrasi, Head of Product Development at the Ministry, emphasized that diversifying tourism offerings is a key objective in enhancing Oman’s appeal as a global adventure destination.

He added in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the Sultanate of Oman is among the countries that attract many people interested in adventure tourism and adventurers of all kinds, due to its unique natural and geological diversity, which is reflected in the variety of activities preferred by adventurers and tourists eager to practice adventure tourism.

To meet this growing demand, the Ministry has taken concrete steps to support infrastructure and safety. It has installed 73 directional signs and 30 informational signs across major mountain trails in Oman, especially in Muscat and the Al Hajar range, to help educate tourists about safety protocols and the significance of these landscapes.

Crucially, Oman’s adventure tourism development is being shaped by best international practices. The Ministry studied the New Zealand model—considered one of the most effective globally—to build a robust legal and safety framework for all adventure activities. A licensing system is now in place for trip organizers, and a risk and safety audit mechanism is being developed for adventure companies.

Further strengthening the safety net, the Ministry is partnering with the Ministry of Defense and the Royal Army of Oman’s Adventure Training Center to train Omani guides. Specialized first aid and mountain rescue programs are also being conducted in collaboration with the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority, with eight courses already completed for Omani tourism professionals.

Private investment is being actively encouraged in this sector, with dedicated training centers and the identification of viable adventure tourism sites already underway.

In May, Oman hosted a delegation from the Saudi Tourism Authority to showcase its regulatory model and facilitate experience exchange between Omani and Saudi companies. The visit included field tours to destinations like Al Jabal Al Akhdar and Al Sujarah Village, offering a firsthand look at Oman’s adventure offerings and safety systems.
