MUSCAT – Proposed features include an aviation museum, shopping centres, restaurants, and a variety of entertainment and commercial attractions.
The initiative from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), aims to revitalise the historic site, once the primary base for Oman Air, by preserving its aviation legacy while positioning it as a new destination within the capital.
During a media briefing last week, Eng. Naif Al Abri, President of the Civil Aviation Authority, said that multiple investment proposals have been submitted and are currently under review by Oman Airports. He indicated that the goal is to create a development that is both economically viable and culturally significant.
Pointing out that the project seeks to honour Oman’s aviation heritage while offering dynamic new experiences to residents and visitors, he stated: “These proposals aim to turn the old airport into a dynamic destination while preserving its historical significance. Oman Airports is currently reviewing the submissions to deter-mine the most suitable and strategic options for implementation.”
Alongside this redevelopment vision, Al Abri highlighted strong performance by Oman’s aviation sector in 2024. The CAA recorded revenues of RO 105 million, reflecting robust operational efficiency and financial sustainability. Air traffic continued to grow, with over 540,300 aircraft passing through Omani airspace – up 14 percent from 2023. Passenger numbers rose by 2 percent, and more than 120,000 flights were recorded during the year. Air cargo volumes also surpassed 150,000 tonnes, pointing to increased demand across the sector.
