Muscat – The featured institutions include Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), University of Nizwa, Dhofar University, Sohar University, and the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech).
On the top of the list is Sultan Qaboos University, which has advanced 28 places to secure the 334th position globally. University of Nizwa was ranked within the 761–770 category, Dhofar University in the 851–900 category, Sohar University placed in the 951–1000 band, and GUtech within the 1001–1200 category.
This achievement highlights the continued development of the academic and research landscape in the Sultanate, as reported by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a UK-based higher education analytics company.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Maryam bint Balarab Al Nabhani, Director General of Private Universities and Colleges at the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, noted that the QS World University Rankings is one of the most respected global benchmarks for evaluating higher education institutions. She quoted the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which seeks to see at least four Omani higher education institutions being counted among the 500 best universities worldwide in the QS ranking.
She explained that the ranking is based on a set of key indicators that assess universities’ performance across various academic and research aspects. These include academic reputation based on expert assessments of the quality of education and research, and the reputation of employers, which reflects graduates’ readiness for the job market. This is in addition to the faculty-to-student ratio as an indicator of educational quality.
She pointed out that research impact is measured by the number of citations to the university’s scientific research, and the proportion of international students and faculty members to highlight the diversity of the university community and its global appeal.
