Muscat: With the total value of road contracts expected to exceed RO 600 million this year, the Ministry is accelerating its commitment to improving connectivity, safety, and economic mobility.
Following the completion of several key national and governorate-linking dual carriageways—including the 400-kilometre-long Sultan Said bin Taimur Road, now the longest in the country—the Ministry is focusing on a new wave of infrastructure upgrades across various governorates.
His Excellency Eng. Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shammakhi, Undersecretary for Transport, stated that the Ministry is advancing several new and ongoing projects. Among the most prominent is the dual carriageway in Wilayat Ibra, North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, connecting Sultan Turki bin Said Road through Al Mudhaibi to Sinaw.

In Al Dhahirah Governorate, work is in progress on dualizing the first phase of the Rub Al Khali Road, linking Al Buraimi to Mahdha over 11 kilometres. Simultaneously, the Ministry is finalizing the remaining works of Sultan Said bin Taimur Road from Adam to Haima and overseeing key developments in Dhofar, including the dualization of roads from Raysut to Al Mughsail and multiple infrastructure upgrades in Maqshan.
Further, in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the dualization of the Izki/Nizwa Road (Qarut Al Janubiyah/Barakat Al Mouz/Farq) and the Jabal Shams Road project are in progress. In South Al Sharqiyah, the dual carriageway project linking Al Kamil, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, and Jalan Bani Bu Ali is in the bid evaluation phase.
The Ministry reported significant progress on key projects: over 46% completion on the Al Kamil-Sur Road and 44% on the Sultan Faisal bin Turki Road. Notably, in 2024 alone, the Ministry awarded road projects exceeding RO 450 million and anticipates total awards to surpass RO 600 million this year. Since the launch of the tenth five-year plan, awarded projects have topped RO 920 million.
Efforts are also underway to improve internal expressway links such as the Al-Musannah (Al-Shuaiba) roundabout and the Sohar link to Al-Batinah Expressway, which is currently in tendering.
Additionally, major maintenance works are ongoing, including on Sultan Thuwaini bin Said Road from Bidbid to Nizwa. Overall, the Ministry manages a road network of over 33,000 kilometres—16,000 of which are asphalt and around 17,000 dirt roads.
