VENICE: Titled “Athar”, the pavilion explores the integration of human and artificial intelligence in architecture, rooted in Omani identity and innovation.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Nizar bin Al Julanda Al Said, Oman’s Ambassador to Italy, the pavilion’s opening ceremony was led by His Excellency Sayyid Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Culture at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Commissioner General of the Pavilion. In his address, HE Al Busaidi emphasized the importance of Oman’s debut at this prestigious global platform.
“The Sultanate of Oman’s participation in the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale represents a qualitative launch through which we highlight the features of the Omani architectural identity, rooted in authenticity and open to the concepts of modernity, sustainability and innovation. It is not just a design participation, but rather an integrated experience of the life of the Omani society, with a narrative and visual spirit whose details are blended with architectural creativity,” he said.

Curated by architect Majida Al Hanai, the Athar pavilion draws inspiration from the traditional Omani sabla—a communal space central to Omani social life. Designed as a 100-square-meter reconfigurable space, the pavilion encourages interaction, dialogue, and co-creation. There are no rigid interior or exterior boundaries, reflecting the sabla’s inclusive spirit.
Visitors will experience seating crafted from natural palm fronds and earth-toned hues that echo Oman’s clay and sand landscapes. The space is intended for cultural exchanges, discussions, and community engagement throughout the exhibition.
This marks Oman’s inaugural participation in the Venice Architecture Biennale, following two past appearances at the Art Biennale, most recently in 2024. The pavilion aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by promoting the nation’s cultural identity and enhancing its global presence.
The Athar pavilion will remain open to the public from May 10 to November 23, 2025, offering an immersive look into how tradition and technology can coexist in architectural expression.
