Muscat – The report also highlights contract terminations resulting from project completion, bankruptcy, and liquidation as significant concerns for the Sultanate’s workforce.
The report was shared by GFOW during the International Workers’ Day celebrations, held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Mahad bin Saeed bin Ali Baowain, Minister of Labour. The event also featured the launch of a new Digital Trade Union Data Management System.
Presenting its annual report for 2024, the GFOW highlighted that the majority of complaints received from workers were related to the unilateral termination of employment contracts by employers without valid justification. Other significant issues included contract terminations due to project completion or company bankruptcy/liquidation, non-payment or delayed payment of wages and bonuses, non-compliance with occupational safety and health regulations, and the transfer of Omani staff to different work locations than those specified in their contracts.
Despite these challenges, the GFOW reported a 100 percent success rate in resolved legal cases, having handled 453 legal consultations and provided 79 direct legal interventions that resulted in favourable court rulings for workers. The federation stated that in several instances, they successfully ensured the non-termination of Omani employees, their continued employment under existing contracts, the widespread employment of Omanis in various establishments, and the implementation of training and qualification programs to enhance the skills of the national workforce. Besides, Omanis whose employment was terminated due to company liquidation or permanent closure were referred to the job security fund for financial support while seeking new job opportunities.
The GFOW indicated key challenges, including the need to expand social protection for low-income workers, advocating for a periodic review of the minimum wage in the private sector to better meet workers’ basic needs, and calling for an extension of the six-month payment period for the job security allowance to align with the realities of the labour market. The federation also proposed the establishment of a minimum retirement pension for private sector retirees.
In a significant step towards modernising its operations and enhancing transparency, the GFOW also officially launched its new Digital Trade Union Data Management System during the International Workers’ Day celebration. This system aims to streamline internal procedures, improve nationwide labour data unification, enhance communication, and foster greater transparency in the governance of trade unions across Oman.
