Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria are deepening their long-standing ties with a clear roadmap for the future. From shared political visions to dynamic collaborations in investment, energy, technology, tourism, and culture, both nations are aligning their goals for sustainable development and regional stability.

The royal visit follows Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s visit to Muscat last October, during which eight wide-ranging memoranda of understanding were signed, including the establishment of a joint Omani-Algerian investment fund. The fund targets key areas such as renewable energy, petrochemicals, desert agriculture, and technology, reinforcing the growing economic footprint between the two nations.

Ambassador Saif bin Nasser Al-Badaei described the upcoming visit as a “major milestone,” underscoring exceptional momentum in bilateral ties and promising tangible outcomes for joint cooperation. Recent exchanges included Omani and Algerian delegations exploring investment opportunities in logistics, water, health, and transportation—highlighting Salalah’s free zone and port as key areas of interest.

The commercial relationship has witnessed notable growth. Trade volume jumped nearly 48% in 2024 to reach over RO 62.9 million, driven largely by Omani exports. The number of joint companies surged by 68.5%, totaling 423 by end-2023.

Strategic investments are already bearing fruit. SOGEX Oman, operational in Algeria since 2004, has invested over $150 million in electricity and water projects. The Suhail Bahwan Group co-owns the $3 billion Omani Algerian Fertilizer Company with Sonatrach, producing ammonia and urea at large scale, and is now exploring automotive manufacturing in Algeria in partnership with Hyundai.

Culturally, ties are flourishing. From Omani participation in Algerian theater and cinema to growing student exchanges and archival collaborations, both nations are fostering deeper people-to-people connections. Academic cooperation is expanding, with increased scholarships for Omani students in Algerian universities.

Oman Vision 2040 remains a compass guiding Muscat’s outward engagement, as it seeks strategic alliances that align with its development goals. Ambassador Al-Badaei and Chamber of Commerce head Faisal Al Rawas both expressed optimism that this visit will unlock new avenues for trade, investment, and strategic cooperation.

Both nations continue to advocate for unified Arab efforts, particularly in championing the Palestinian cause, and support peace and stability based on international law and justice.
