MUSCAT : In a media briefing held on Wednesday evening, Hamoud bin Murdad Al Shabibi, official spokesman for the Ministry, revealed a significant increase in begging cases during Ramadan and holidays, with a majority of offenders being expatriates.
Responding to questions from media representatives, he pointed out that the Royal Oman Police is primarily responsible for apprehending beggars. “Most of the beggars are non-Omanis,” he added.
The media event was chaired by Her Excellency Dr. Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development, who reiterated that many individuals engaged in begging are doing so as a profession, rather than out of genuine need.
The Ministry used the media briefing to discuss its broader initiatives across various sectors, including social care, services for persons with disabilities, family and community development, voluntary civil work, and social responsibility. The event aimed to enhance communication and joint dialogue with the media, providing insights into the Ministry’s achievements, indicators, plans, and future aspirations.
