MUSCAT : The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Applied Sciences (2023), focuses on using local cooling techniques to enhance the accuracy of non-invasive breast cancer screening, especially for small or deep tumors.
Dr. Al-Hussaini, from the Arab Open University in Oman, collaborated with leading researchers from Malaysia and Saudi Arabia to analyze the effect of heat on different breast tissues using the COMSOL multiphysics simulation program. Their findings show that local cooling significantly improves thermal contrast in breast scans, making it easier to detect tumors that may otherwise go unnoticed.
The study found that for tumors located 10 centimeters deep, a thermal difference of 6°C could be achieved using cooling gel—an improvement not possible with traditional imaging techniques. However, tumors smaller than 0.5 cm or deeply embedded in the breast layers were harder to detect, highlighting the need for further clinical trials.
