MUSCAT : The ruling included a conviction, a fine, and an order for product replacement, highlighting the Consumer Protection Authority’s (CPA) commitment to safeguarding consumer rights.
The case was initiated after a consumer filed a complaint with the Authority, claiming defects in one of six air conditioning units purchased for RO 1,299. Despite multiple attempts by the establishment to repair the faulty unit, the issue persisted, leading the consumer to pursue legal action.
The CPA intervened, attempting to facilitate an amicable resolution. However, when efforts to reach a settlement failed, the complaint was referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation. The prosecution subsequently forwarded the case to the competent court.
The court ruled that the defendants must replace the defective air conditioning units with new ones of the same specifications and type. Additionally, they were fined RO 100 and ordered to compensate the complainant RO 100, along with covering legal expenses.
The Consumer Protection Authority has reiterated the importance of businesses adhering to the laws designed to protect consumers’ rights. It emphasized that it will continue to take necessary legal actions to ensure businesses comply and safeguard consumer interests across the region.
