MUSCAT : The case stemmed from a complaint lodged by a consumer against a construction company hired to build a residential property. Despite paying RO 34,320 in instalments as per the contract, the consumer reported that the company failed to complete the work within the agreed timeframe, ignored communication attempts, and significantly delayed service delivery.
The CPA office in Al Suwaiq intervened by summoning representatives from the contracting company. Following discussions, a settlement was reached, leading to the refund of RO 2,100. This action was taken in accordance with Article 23 and Article 39 of the Consumer Protection Law 66/2014, which ensures that providers must deliver services as agreed or refund the service fee if they fail to comply with the terms.
The Authority also referred to Article 2of the same law, which highlights that failure to meet delivery deadlines or complete agreed-upon services constitutes a violation of consumer rights, including the principles of fairness, equality, and integrity.
The CPA emphasises the importance of service providers adhering to consumer protection laws and fulfilling their contractual obligations to safeguard consumer rights and maintain trust in the marketplace.
