Muscat – These discoveries were made as part of the International Asteroid Search (IASC) initiative, which focuses on identifying and tracking near-Earth asteroids using the latest in scientific technologies.
Two members of the Omani Society for Astronomy and Space, who participated in the initiative as part of a research team, were able to contribute effectively to the monitoring process. This reflects the advanced scientific capabilities of Omani astronomers and demonstrates the ability of amateur and professional researchers in Oman to contribute effectively to global astronomical research. By utilising modern technologies and participating in international scientific initiatives, they have made a tangible contribution.

In recognition of their efforts, the participants in this initiative were awarded official certificates from NASA, acknowledging their outstanding scientific contributions to asteroid monitoring and tracking. The honor serves as a testament to the vital role that Omani researchers play in global scientific advancements.

Ashraf bin Ali Al Mahrouqi, one of the team members and a key contributor from the OSAS, expressed that this achievement aligns with the society’s commitment to advancing scientific research in astronomy. He emphasized the enthusiasm and dedication of Omani researchers in analysing precise data and tracking celestial bodies.

He further pointed out that this recognition from NASA is a powerful motivator for continued participation in international research projects. Such initiatives, he added, help to boost Oman’s presence on the global scientific stage.

He stressed in a statement to the Oman News Agency that the honor from NASA represents a strong incentive to continue working and participating in such international research projects, which contributes to enhancing the Omani presence in the global scientific arena.

He further pointed out that the Society seeks, through its participation in international initiatives, promote astronomical culture within the local community, particularly among Omani youth. Through its involvement in global initiatives, the society encourages young people to engage in space sciences and scientific research, strengthening Oman’s position in the growing field of space exploration.
He added that this discovery is an important step towards strengthening international cooperation in the field of astronomy, and opens up broad horizons for more future achievements that may contribute to placing the Sultanate of Oman among the leading countries in the field of monitoring and tracking celestial bodies.
