MUSCAT : The event, held in collaboration with Jamia Millia Islamia, focused on the longstanding commercial and cultural ties between the two nations, which have spanned more than 5,000 years.

The symposium explored the historical role of Omani ports, including Muscat, Sohar, and Qalhat, in facilitating maritime trade, as well as the influence of cultural exchanges on language, arts, architecture, and the role of Indian communities in promoting pluralism and religious tolerance in Oman.

His Excellency Ashok Kumar Attri, former ambassador of India to Oman, shared his personal experiences living in Oman, reflecting on the reasons for the settlement of Indian families in the Sultanate and his tenure as the head of the Indian mission in Muscat. He also emphasised the strength of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Prashant Bissih, Director General of the Indian Council for World Affairs, spoke about the historical depth of Omani-Indian relations, highlighting that the foundation of these ties is built on friendship, mutual benefit, and coexistence. He presented a research paper titled ‘The History of Omani-Indian Relations and the Impact of Pluralism and the Culture of Difference on Religious Pluralism and Civilizational Understanding’.

Dr. Saud bin Abdullah Al Zadjali also presented a working paper, ‘The Historical Reasons for the Strength of Relations from Western and Eastern Perspectives’, where he discussed India’s strategic role as a permanent partner of the Arabian Gulf and its relationship with diverse peoples that foster mutual interests and civilizational exchange.

The symposium was attended by Indian officials, former ambassadors to Oman, academics, and students interested in the rich cultural and historical ties between the two countries.

In its conclusion, the symposium stressed the importance of continuing cultural and scientific dialogues, strengthening cooperation in economic and educational fields, and furthering Oman’s and India’s shared commitment to building a brighter future of collaboration.
