MUSCAT : As per Article 23, Omani nationals automatically lose their citizenship if they acquire the nationality of another country, violating the terms set out by the law.
Articles 25 and 25 specify loss of citizenship due to marital status:
• A foreigner granted Omani nationality through marriage to an Omani woman loses their Omani citizenship if the marriage ends in divorce or desertion within five years of the citizenship grant. This loss is effective from the date of the divorce or desertion. Howver, the father’s loss of nationality in this case does not result in the children losing their Omani nationality.
• A foreign woman granted Omani nationality through marriage to an Omani man loses her Omani citizenship if the marriage ends in divorce and she subsequently marries a non-Omani. The loss is effective from the date of the second marriage.
Revocation of Omani citizenship
Article 26 outlines situations in which an Omani national may have their citizenship revoked. These include:
• Insulting the Sultanate of Oman or the Sultan by word or deed.
• If he belongs to a group, party or organisation that embraces principles or beliefs that harm the interests of the Sultanate of Oman.
• If he works for a foreign country in a job that conflicts with the interests of the Sultanate of Oman, whether his work is inside or outside the Sultanate of Oman, and he does not comply with the request of the Omani government to leave this job within the specified period.
• If he works for a hostile country that works against the interests of the Sultanate of Oman.
However, Omani citizenship can be reinstated if the grounds for revocation are no longer valid.
Withdrawal of Omani Citizenship
Article 27 outlines the grounds for the withdrawal of citizenship from individuals who acquired it under questionable circumstances. These include:
• Acquiring nationality illegally or through fraudulent means.
• Being convicted of crimes against state security or serving multiple sentences for felonies within five years of acquiring citizenship.
• Residing outside Oman for an extended period (more than 24 consecutive months) without a valid reason.
