Muscat – South Al Batinah Governorate leads the way with the highest number of green inns, followed by Al Dhahirah Governorate.

The Ministry is working diligently to align its efforts with the goals of the Oman Vision 2040, conducting a comprehensive review of tourism plans and programs to ensure they are in line with both national objectives and global trends. This includes a focus on the quality, diversity, and sustainability of the tourism products available, especially green inns.

Ahmed bin Khamis Al Saadi, Director of the Investor Services Department at the Ministry, emphasized the growing demand for green inns, particularly among tourists and investors. These eco-friendly accommodations are seen as ideal for families and individuals seeking sustainable and immersive experiences, while also providing an income source for local communities involved in the tourism sector.
As part of the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives, new standards for green inns are being developed in collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure that these facilities meet the growing needs of the tourism market in Oman. The green inns may eventually be classified based on sustainability, available activities, and adherence to quality standards, offering a diverse range of experiences for visitors.

To encourage investment in green tourism, the Ministry has also reduced licensing fees for green inns. The current fee is set at 250 Omani riyals for a five-year period. Additionally, the Ministry coordinates with financial institutions to support the owners of these projects and facilitates the licensing process, ensuring that potential investors can smoothly navigate the required procedures.

Since the introduction of green inns in 2015, the Ministry has conducted numerous workshops in various governorates to raise awareness and promote these sustainable tourism options. These efforts aim to encourage citizens to invest in green, heritage, and guest house projects, which align with Oman’s broader vision for a competitive and sustainable tourism industry.

Green inns, particularly in rural and natural areas, play a vital role in supporting the local community by creating job opportunities and stimulating economic activities. These inns also provide visitors with authentic Omani experiences, such as local cuisine, handicrafts, and interactions with the environment, thus fostering a stronger connection between tourists and the community.

Al Saadi noted that the government is keen to develop agricultural and rural tourism, particularly by encouraging farmers to invest in tourism projects that offer unique experiences. He emphasized the importance of sustainable practices such as using renewable resources, social responsibility, and awareness-raising initiatives to ensure the longevity of green inns.

Despite the progress, there are challenges, including urban sprawl, which threatens green spaces, and the scarcity of natural resources such as water. The Ministry continues to address these challenges by educating consumers and investors about the environmental impacts of tourism activities and the importance of sustainability in all aspects of the tourism sector.

The efforts to grow green inns are part of Oman’s broader strategy to promote sustainable tourism, enhance local communities, and create a resilient tourism infrastructure that aligns with both economic and environmental goals.
