MUSCAT : During the meeting, committee members engaged in detailed discussions on the provisions and articles of the proposed law, focusing on key elements such as definitions and commonly used terms.
The members examined different legal formulations and explored the rationale behind these provisions.

As part of the deliberations, the committee proposed amendments to several sections of the draft law to ensure consistency with international conventions to which Oman is a party. They also compared the proposed law with existing legislation and similar laws in other countries to ensure its effectiveness and alignment with global standards.

The draft law aims to update the current Anti-Human Trafficking Law to ensure better integration with existing legislation, particularly the Penal Code, and to meet the requirements of international agreements. This will address practical challenges and gaps identified during the enforcement of the existing law, necessitating legislative intervention to align with regional and international developments. The revisions also focus on enhancing protections for victims and streamlining judicial processes for law enforcement agencies.

The proposed amendments reaffirm Oman’s strong commitment to human rights and its ongoing efforts to ensure justice for all segments of society. Oman was one of the first countries in the region to enact specific legislation targeting human trafficking, with the original law introduced by royal decree in 2008.
According to Article 47 of the Oman Council Law, draft laws prepared by the government are reviewed by the Oman Council before being submitted to His Majesty the Sultan for final ratification and issuance.

The meeting, presided over by H.E. Dr. Ahmed Ali Al-Saadi, Chairman of the Legal and Legislative Committee, marked the fifth session of the second annual sitting (2024–2025) of the council’s 10th term (2023–2027).
