MUSCAT : The Sultanate of Oman, through the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University and the Arab Federation for Libraries and Information, is set to host the 35th Arab Federation for Libraries and Information Conference.

The conference, themed “Arab Libraries and Archives Institutions and Their Role in Promoting Digital Identity and Citizenship,” will gather top Omani specialists and Arab experts to discuss the evolving role of libraries in the digital age.

Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Harthy, Director General of the Directorate General of Knowledge and Cultural Development at the Ministry, highlighted that Oman aims to position itself as a hub for research and development in the fields of libraries and information, enhancing both cultural and digital awareness across the Arab community. Al Harthy added that libraries play an essential role in building skills, disseminating knowledge, and advancing the knowledge economy.

The conference program will feature sessions led by prominent speakers from across the Arab world, focusing on themes such as the role of information institutions in promoting digital identity and citizenship, the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in information management, and challenges faced by libraries in supporting digital citizenship.

This event also aligns with “Oman Vision 2040,” which places high importance on national identity, heritage, and cultural development. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth aims to reinforce these values by leveraging libraries and cultural centers as foundations for a society equipped to contribute to an intellectually dynamic and culturally grounded future.

In addition to keynotes and panel discussions, the conference will offer workshops to foster innovation and knowledge sharing in the field of information and archives. These sessions aim to address challenges in creating a digital environment that respects user privacy while optimizing data and new technologies as critical resources.
