Muscat – The Ministry has launched a questionnaire aimed at gathering insights on how consumers in Oman use melamine utensils, and whether they are aware of potential health risks associated with improper use. Melamine, a type of plastic commonly used to manufacture reusable tableware such as plates, cups, and mugs, has raised concerns due to potential health risks. While melamine utensils are widely popular for their durability and low cost, they can become hazardous when used incorrectly.
Experts caution against using melamine dinnerware for heating or cooking food, placing it in microwaves or ovens, or using sharp utensils like knives that can scratch the surface. In particular, using melamine dishes with acidic foods—such as citrus or vinegar—can cause the material to react, potentially releasing harmful substances.
Recent studies have highlighted the dangers of melamine in everyday use. Research has found that consuming food served in melamine dishes can lead to the accumulation of melamine crystals in the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney stones and other renal issues. Long-term exposure has also been linked to cancer, making it a concern for public health.
