Oman chairs meeting on infection prevention and control at UN General Assembly in New York

The Sultanate of Oman chaired a meeting focused on infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) within the health sector during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Muscat – H.E. Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamoud Albusaidi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, led the discussion, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in health initiatives.

In his address, H.E. Albusaidi underscored Oman’s commitment to supporting global health efforts, aiming to ensure a healthy and safe future for generations to come. The meeting served as a platform for leaders attending the UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Infection Prevention and Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship to reinforce their commitment to implementing effective IPC and AMS programs, which are essential for combating antimicrobial resistance globally.

Key objectives of the meeting included sharing successful experiences from various countries in developing robust policy frameworks for infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance, as well as discussing actionable indicators and targets to monitor progress. This collaboration seeks to enhance accountability in tackling these critical health challenges.



The event featured a scientific forum that showcased contributions from the Sultanate of Oman, the World Health Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Germany, Nigeria, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.
Experts addressed a variety of technical issues, including the current status of infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance indicators and the cost-effectiveness of prevention strategies.

This meeting further cements Oman’s role as a leader in global health initiatives, aligning with sustainable development goals and advancing health systems. The Sultanate has gained significant recognition on the international stage for its active participation in global health matters.

Representing the Ministry of Health, H.E. Dr. Ahmed bin Salem Al Mandhari, Undersecretary for Health Planning and Regulation, attended the meeting alongside a delegation of key health officials. The gathering brought together ministers, heads of delegations, and leading experts in the field, all dedicated to enhancing health systems and combating antimicrobial resistance.
