In life, we encounter countless people who shape our experiences, perspectives, and personal growth. Some of these individuals become more than just colleagues – they become integral to our personal and professional journeys. At work, these relationships go beyond mere collaboration; they offer companionship, support, and a shared sense of purpose, helping us navigate the pressures of daily life.
As human beings, it is natural for us to form bonds wherever we spend significant time, and the workplace is no exception. Over time, professional relationships often evolve into friendships or even feel like family. We share moments of joy, frustration, and rely on each other when times are tough. These connections nurture our emotional well-being as much as they support professional collaboration.
When a colleague who has become such a significant presence in our lives moves on, it leaves a noticeable void. It is a reminder that careers, like life itself, are journeys of arrivals and departures. Change is inevitable, and while it is never easy to say goodbye, we know it is part of life’s natural rhythm.

This brings me to someone who has had such a profound impact on me and the FitsAir family: Asitha Jayampathy Ranaweera, our Chief Operating Officer and Accountable Managers decision to step down marks the end of an era for FitsAir and for many of us who have worked closely with him. Asitha’s departure leaves a void, a testament to the deep connections he formed and the role he played in our professional and personal lives.
When I first arrived in Sri Lanka over a year ago, adjusting to a new culture was not easy. In this unfamiliar environment, I sought someone who could guide me, and that person was Asitha. From our first meeting, his empathy, openness, and willingness to help made my transition into the Sri Lankan work culture seamless. Asitha was not just a colleague – he became a teacher for me who really helps for adjusting to the work culture here and, more importantly, a friend.
His office was always open – both literally and figuratively. I remember walking into his office without any pre notification, knowing that no matter how busy he was, he would always listen. His office was a place of comfort for many at FitsAir, a space where we knew we would be heard and supported.
Asitha’s influence went far beyond his role as Chief Operating officer and Accountable Manager. He understood that in today’s fast-paced world, where personal relationships are often sacrificed for professional demands, a workplace needs to foster a sense of family. And that’s exactly what he did at FitsAir. His ability to build and nurture strong relationships is something we will all miss deeply.
He made you feel at home, even when you were far from it. His calm demeanour and thoughtful approach to challenges encouraged open dialogue, and though we sometimes disagreed – sometimes passionately – those discussions often led to the best outcomes for the organization. Asitha’s leadership was not about imposing decisions but about collaboration, discussion, and finding the most effective path forward.
After nearly two decades in aviation, following nearly nine years of service in the Sri Lanka Air Force, Asitha has chosen to shift his focus. This isn’t a traditional retirement but rather a transformation. He is embarking on a new chapter where he will dedicate more time to his passions – farming and spending time with his cherished dog.
Asitha’s love for agriculture has long been known to those close to him. Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England” for its cool climate and lush greenery, is where he plans to immerse himself in the rhythms of farming. His passion for this simple yet fulfilling life reflects his deep connection with nature.
Of course, we can not overlook the profound bond Asitha shares with his beloved dog. Their relationship transcends the typical companionship between a pet and its owner, embodying the unconditional love that connects all living beings. Every day, his dog waits patiently by the door, ears perked and eyes full of expectation, eager for his return. For Asitha, his dog is not just a companion but a true member of his family, ever-present by his side. Now, as he enters this new chapter of life, he can finally give his “son” the undivided attention he deserves. Their relationship serves as a reminder of the richness that love, whether between humans or animals, brings to our lives.
Asitha’s contributions to FitsAir and the broader aviation industry are immense. He began his career in 1995 with the Sri Lanka Air Force, rising through various roles at Expo Aviation and AeroLanka Pvt. Ltd. before joining FitsAir. Asitha played a pivotal role in FitsAir’s growth, especially in recent years, as we expanded our operations. His deep understanding of aviation regulations and strategic insights helped FitsAir a lot ,Though his decision to leave the professional life marks the end of an era, his legacy will continue to inspire us.
In today’s world, where work pressures often disconnect us from nature, Asitha’s decision to focus on farming is a testament to his values. He is not stepping away from life but embracing it in a different, more profound way. His journey reminds us that success is not only about career achievements but also about finding peace and fulfilment in life’s simpler pleasures.
Asitha, you aren’t retiring – you’re transforming, embracing a new journey filled with nature, serenity, and the warmth of familiar surroundings. While you may be leaving the corporate world, the connections you have made and the influence you have had will remain with us. We wish you all the best in this next chapter. May your days on the farm bring you peace, and may your bond with your beloved dog deepen.
Definitely, one day, we may find ourselves visiting your farm in Nuwara Eliya, reflecting on all that we have learned from you.
