MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is projected to lose its majority in Indian parliament after a decade.
As India counts votes, trends so far suggest the BJP will likely need the help of allies to form government as a united opposition led by the Indian National Congress makes gains.
The BJP and allied parties appeared to have secured almost 300 of 543 seats in parliament, early election results showed, which would give them a simple majority. The result would weaken Modi, whose dominance over India has steadily grown since he gained power in 2014.
