MEXICO : Peru’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the restoration of relations after allowing former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez to leave the country for Mexico.
Peru severed diplomatic relations with Mexico in late 2025 after the Mexican embassy in Lima granted asylum to Chávez, who faced legal proceedings over her alleged role in former President Pedro Castillo’s attempt to dissolve Congress in December 2022.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the new Peruvian government had granted Chávez safe passage at Mexico’s request, describing the move as a gesture of goodwill by President Fujimori’s administration.

Chávez left Peru for Mexico after receiving safe-conduct from the Peruvian authorities. Peru, however, retains the right to seek her extradition.
Relations between the two Latin American nations had deteriorated over several years, particularly over Mexico’s support for Castillo and his family. Previous leftist governments in Mexico strongly backed the ousted Peruvian leader, deepening tensions with Lima.
Castillo was removed from office following his failed attempt to dissolve Congress in 2022 and was later sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
