Muscat – The agreement covers a land area of 58,000 square meters at Sohar Freezone, with an investment cost of $11 million. The first project involves the establishment of a facility for the production of engineering polymers, plastic masterbatch, composites, and thermoplastics. The second project will focus on building an advanced urea filling unit.
The engineering polymers facility aims to produce flexible thermoplastics and chemical compounds sourced from the local market, specifically from the Plastic Industries Complex of the OQ Group, as well as from regional and European markets. These products will be re-exported to local and international markets in North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, with an annual production capacity of 25,000 tons.
The advanced urea filling unit will refill bulk urea into containers of 25, 50, and 1000 kg capacities using a special coating technology that includes inhibitors to improve performance and shelf life. Raw materials such as urea granules, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, and thiophosphoric triamide will be sourced from local and regional markets, with the final products targeting global markets including Europe and Africa.
These projects aim to leverage modern technology and enhance innovation by utilizing German expertise to improve supply chain efficiency and meet growing market demands. This creates significant added value in the global chemicals market for household appliances, the automobile industry, medical equipment, and water supply infrastructure.
Omar bin Mahmoud Al Mahrezi, CEO of Sohar Freezone and Deputy CEO of Sohar Port, stated that these projects mark a significant advancement in the chemicals manufacturing sector at Sohar Port and Free Zone. He emphasized the commitment to fostering a fruitful environment for business and innovation, promoting international cooperation, and encouraging sustainable investments to enhance competitive capabilities and achieve growth in multiple sectors.
Jens Frickel, Sales Director of German company MAK, highlighted that these projects will enhance the company’s operational capacity and position in the global chemicals market by leveraging the benefits of the Sohar Freezone. He expressed optimism about meeting the growing demand for high-quality chemical products in major markets such as Europe, India, and China.
Sohar Free Zone attracts industries from 53 countries, strengthening its role as a key driver of economic diversification. The first phase of the zone is nearly 85 percent leased, and the second phase is underway to provide a total area of up to 675 hectares to meet the increasing demand for industrial and commercial spaces.
