Kochi: Abdul Rahim’s story is one of tragedy and hope, spanning over 18 years of incarceration in a foreign land. Accused of causing the accidental death of a Saudi boy in 2006, Rahim faced the grim prospect of a death sentence since 2018, with the only chance of reprieve being the payment of 15 million Saudi Riyals, equivalent to around ₹34 crore, by April 18, 2024.

Initially struggling to gather significant funds, an action committee formed to aid Rahim witnessed an overwhelming surge of support as the deadline loomed. The collective efforts of over 75 organizations in the Gulf region, prominent businessman Bobby Chemmannur, various political groups in Kerala, and thousands of individuals worldwide culminated in this remarkable fundraising feat.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lauded the resilience and compassion exhibited by the people of Kerala, hailing it as the “Real Kerala Story.” Despite facing adversities and divisive narratives, Kerala’s unwavering commitment to its values and people shines through Rahim’s story.

The fundraising drive, facilitated through a transparent mobile application, received contributions from all walks of life, demonstrating a profound sense of community and solidarity. Bobby Chemmannur, a key figure in the efforts, organized fundraising events and pledged employment for Rahim upon his return to Kerala.

Overwhelmed by the swift and substantial support, Rahim’s mother expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the transformative impact of collective action in securing her son’s future and reuniting their family.
