Muscat: The onset of winter has brushed over the world. Christmas has come yet again and left us with a fuzzy feeling of belonging and warmth. While many of us are still wrapped in the sheets, sipping on something warm and watching the streets covered with mist, some are gearing up for a winter vacation away from their comfort spot. If you are an inch away from strapping your laces and buckling in your backpacks, this special gift is waiting to be unwrapped.

1: The best-kept secrets of nature

South Tyrol (Italy)

Nestled within the ‘Sunny side of the Alps’ lies a gem called South Tyrol. A sea of mountains, castle-like structures etched in stone, mirror-still lakes, and cliff-clinging vineyards awaits the adventurer within you. Not popularly known by many, this untouched region continues to draw tourists and thrill-seekers looking for an experience that no one is willing to explore.

Italian, German, Austrian and Ladin (natives of the remote valleys of Dolomites) add beauty to the eclectic culture that enhances the beauty of South Tyrol. The cultural pot ensures you a variety of cuisine, architecture and a history that will not be found anywhere else in the world.

South Tyrol is a place that guarantees a different view with every visit. Even though it is part of the Italian Alps, two people could visit South Tyrol and still find it uniquely different to anything else they have ever seen. The Adige River snakes through the region and gradually blends with the Alpine as you ascend the slopes.

With the Dolomites covering most of the eastern side of South Tyrol, the landscape provides a breathtaking view that looks like volcanic eruptions frozen in time, making it look like a topography straight out of a science fiction movie. With 12 snow-blanketed valleys, 1200 square miles await the winter backpackers who wish to make the most of the Dolomites. With the 2026 Winter Olympics also waiting to occur in the Dolomites, South Tyrol deserves a spot on your bucket list.

2: Your chance to live a life inside nature’s tapestry

Mechuka (Arunachal Pradesh)

Now, let’s travel farther away from the Alps, deep inside the picturesque valley near the Indo-Tibet border. Have you ever been to a place where all you can see around you is the vast expanse of nature as far as the eyes can see? If you’re a fan of The Lion King, you will know the infamous scene where Mufasa says, “Everything you see exists in a delicate balance.” This is exactly what Mechuka is all about.

Mechuka houses a breathtaking natural lake at a high altitude, adorned by a 400-year-old Buddhist monastery of Arunachal Pradesh named Samtem Yongcha, with a hilltop view that will make you feel like you’re living inside a painting. The word Mechuka translates to ‘Medicinal Water of Snow’, and rightfully so; it is an experience that has the power to heal the gaping hole within your soul that yearns for an experience unlike anything you have had before. With everything you see around you guarded by lush green pine trees and forests, Mechuka has the river Siyom flowing through it, housing a multifaceted biodiversity.

The fact that this gem has stayed hidden for a while now has led to the successful preservation of culture and tradition for the residents of Mechuka. It is home to the members of the Memba, Ramo, Bokar, and Libo tribes. The people of Mechuka are a highlight for those visiting this Arunachal Pradesh treasure. The warmth and the love shown by the individuals are just what you need to keep yourself as you plan your winter travel to the lush valleys of Mechuka.
