New Labour Law explained: Rights of working women in Oman

MUSCAT: The new Oman Labour approved by His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik on Tuesday Law grants numerous benefits to working women.

These privileges include an allocated hour each day for child care and a 98-day maternity leave provision. Further, it allows them to avail themselves of an unpaid leave period lasting up to a year for child care. The law also obliges employers to provide a dedicated rest place in establishments where the number of female workers exceeds 25.

Following are the rights of a working women in the new Labour Law:

  1. The employer is required to provide a designated rest area at the premises of the establishment where the number of female workers exceeds 25.
  2. A female worker is entitled to (98) days of maternity leave, covering the period before and after childbirth.
  3. A nursing worker is granted one hour per day for the care of her child. This commences following the end of the maternity leave and continues for one year. The timing of this hour is at the discretion of the worker, and this hour is included within the actual working hours.
  4. The working woman may be granted unpaid leave for a period of one year to care for her child.
