MUSCAT – Speaking at the media briefing, Dr Noreen bint Yousuf al Balushi, President of OTS and Consultant Hepatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon said the Society, through the campaign, will target all age groups and will conduct events to raise awareness and spread the culture of organ donation.
She stated that OTS hopes to register 100,000 donors during the first year and also to cover a large number of cases related to organ failure, through a specialized centre for organ transplantation. Currently, around 8,000 people have registered for organ donation through the Shifa app.

Pointing out the importance of safety in organ donation, she explained that the same is ensured through proper checks, as well as assessments to ascertain absence of any coercion to donate, absence of trade in human organs, and absence of prior barter, as per the international regulations and laws in the Sultanate of Oman. Dr Nefine al Kalbani, Head of Organ Donation Department at The Royal Hospital, also explained that the Health Ministry had, in total, conducted 24 liver and 325 kidney transplants, and pointed out that there are more than 2,300 patients on dialysis who are waiting for kidney transplants. The first organ transplant in Oman was done in 1988 for a kidney transplant. Liver transplant operations were initiated in the country in 2017.
