MUSCAT : Why do roads in Oman have a maximum speed limit of 120km/h? Mohammad Al-Khayari, Director of the Traffic Engineering Department at Royal Omah Police talks about the logic behind maintaining the speed limit at 120km/h.
Speaking in an interview, Al-Khayari clarifies that 120km/h speed restriction is a globally approved speed limit to ensure safety while driving.
He quotes studies to stress that most tragic traffic accidents occur when the speed is above 120 kilometers per hour, depending on the type of vehicle and the road condition.

“Not all vehicles are able to maintain the 120km/h speed at the same level,” he states, noting that a speed of 120 kilometers per hour on highways demands good driving skills.
Besides, not all drivers are skilled at handling top speeds, and not every motorist can reach peak speeds with ease, he maintains, emphasizing the need to stick to a maximum speed limit of 120km/h for better road management.
It is important to note here that the primary purpose of speed limits is to enhance safety by reducing risks imposed by drivers’ personal speed choices. Speed management is critical to road safety.
