Have you ever travelled and met different people? Of course, you must have travelled, I guess. Being in the project management field is similar. You feel that you are on a journey. A project manager’s job is more than just to complete the project, it involves so much more. 

Yes, I agree that the project owner wants the work done on time. You need competence, you need to reach the target, and sometimes you need to be aggressive in project management. “You need to push and make a move, then the results will ring through,” my senior advised. 

“Things never move unless we ring the bell, it is always a pushy environment,” he added. Be prepared to not be liked by stakeholders in project management due to their desire for fast results without errors. “We are waiting for you. We have been called to an urgent meeting, on the third floor,” my colleague sent me an SMS. 

“In five minutes, I will be on my way, I need to reschedule the other meeting,” I replied to my colleague and rushed to the meeting. Project management requires someone serious about being accurate, precise, fast, and result-oriented. If not, then assume that the project is dead and not moving. If you’ve heard of the term “comfort zone”, put it out of perspective in Project Management as there is none in the field; you’re mostly working in the “heat zone.”

“It doesn’t work in this way. It is impossible to complete the project without your cooperation. The User Acceptance Testing – UAT- had to be over last week and we are yet to start,” I watched my colleague, talking on the phone to the vendor and giving him hard time to provide the results. 

Basically, this is teamwork as I experienced it, where the colleague came to support me midway through the project. Every day is a new day in project management because you need to know the project cycle and keep the end result in mind. Here you need to use your leadership traits if you have them. If not, then you need to take leadership courses since this is the field where you need to lead and manage.  

You’ll learn new things every day in this field, which makes it so interesting. Throughout the year, you will work on different projects, which means you will learn and use different skills. 

Is not this interesting? In my experience so far, one of the best things I have learned is the psychology and mentality of each stakeholder, such as their approach, their demands, and their understanding of the project’s importance.
