Banking practices today differ from those in 1200, when they were first pioneered in Venice, Italy. It is interesting to note that “Bank” derives from the word Banque, which means “Bench”. The word banque is of Italian origin. 

“Once we have twenty-five years of banking experience, will we know the functions of each department like you?”, as one of the participants asked me on the second day of the course, in the course entitled “Foundations of Banking” in the College of Banking and Financial Studies.

I still remember what his name was, Abdul Aziz, with a smile on his face, asking the question. A whiteboard was near the second row of chairs, where he was seated. “You don’t need to have all these years. I emphasized, “All you have to do is work hard, learn quickly, use your smarts and show an eagerness to learn everything about banking”.  

It was interesting how I was challenged by one of them, Hanoof, about a mathematical formula, on Fixed Deposit calculations. It took the class around fifteen to twenty minutes to be engaged in such a debate to solve the tricky question. Practical lessons like these are required in today’s classes and sessions. 

Each participant represented a different department of the bank, making the class very practical. The first was from “Collections”, the second from “IT Support”, the third was from “Foreign Remittance”, the fourth from “Customer Service”, the fifth was from “Data Collection and Analysis”, and so on. Such a combination has greatly enhanced the class’s value. 

“Let’s have a class activity”, I said to the class. The flip chart was used to write the department names where each of them works and why others like or dislike that department. They enjoyed participating in the activity, which made them more confident about expressing their opinions and views. 

This is how I envisioned the activity in my mind:

In the class, they were motivated since this activity has impressed everyone with their career and future in banking. The expression on their faces showed their excitement at the prospect of different opportunities within the banking industry.

Being successful in the banking industry or any other industry does not require rocket science, it only requires understanding the game of chess and how to play it intelligently. I encouraged them to play the chess game every day, so they know when to move, jump, pause, go back, and the right time to win. 

It is necessary to respect the seniors and never make a decision for emotional reasons, I have advised.
