MUSCAT: A medical team specialised in organ transplantation at the Royal Hospital was able to perform 4 kidney transplants within one week, through advanced laparoscopic technology, for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure, including two cases for children and two cases for adults.

Dr. Qassim bin Ahmed Al Salmi, Director-General of the Royal Hospital, told Oman News Agency that performing 4 kidney transplants, along with what has been previously accomplished in this aspect, comes as a continuation of the series of efforts made to transplant human organs and tissues.

He stressed the hospital’s readiness and the efficiency of national cadres in the health sector to perform various surgeries and deal with various health cases.

Dr. Nevin bint Ibrahim Al-Kalbania, Senior Consultant of Pediatric Nephrology and Head of Organ Transplantation at the Royal Hospital, declared that the process of organ transplantation and transfer is one of the most important pioneering operations in the health sector.

It is carried out by transferring a healthy organ from one body to another, with the aim of replacing the damaged or missing organ in the recipient’s body.

Dr. Muhammad bin Saeed Al-Abri, consultant of obesity, upper gastrointestinal surgery and advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Royal Hospital, indicated that advanced laparoscopic operations have brought about a qualitative leap in surgeries in general and organ transplant surgery in particular. It consists in reducing the number of hospitalisation days, reducing the possibility of infections after the operation, feeling less pain than open surgery, and having a short recovery period.
