MUSCAT: Oman has been ranked among the countries with “high and effective” health system, according to a report by the United Nations on ‘Sustainable Development Outlook 2021’.
The list of countries with effective health coverage includes northern European countries in addition to Japan, South Korea and Singapore.
In a detailed report, UN also praised Oman’s preparedness in dealing with COVID-19. “The country’s pandemic preparedness index score was 43.1, which ranked 73/193 for countries in the world,” UN report stated.

“Oman’s response to the pandemic has focused on supporting primary healthcare facilities from early in the pandemic, and on boosting its UHC by increasing hospital capacity, including the number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, and by mobilizing the health-care workforce,” UN said.
“The Government has provided COVID-19 diagnostic and treatment coverage free of charge to both Omani citizens and the expat community. The public health system enabled effective coordination of response activities at the regional and local levels, while the business sector facilitated supplies and technologies to the Government,” the report said.
The UN report also highlighted Oman’s role in controlling and eliminating major communicable diseases, “achieved remarkable reductions in maternal and child mortality rates, and steadily reduced the mortality attributed to non-communicable diseases in the past decade.”
“The government-driven national-level response strategies were complemented with the engagement of the business sector and community-driven actions,” the report added.
