MUSCAT: Royal Oman Police (ROP) on Tuesday arrested an expatriate on charges of fraud and for allegedly posing as a bank employee.

In a statement issued, ROP said its Economic Crimes Control Department arrested the suspect and the case is under process.

“The criminal method was that the victim transferred a sum of money through one of the exchange house, after which he received a phone call from the exchange employee, pretending that he was an employee of the bank he was dealing with,” ROP explained.

“He asked him to update the bank card to facilitate his transfer of funds abroad and to give him the OTP number that he received via text message at that moment, which enabled the accused to siphon out large sums of money from the victim’s account,” ROP added.

ROP warned the public against falling prey to such scams, and to be careful of calls asking for personal details.
